bié (別)

literally means “to separate, distinguish, or discriminate;” bié (別) also means “other or another,” or even something that is precluded. Bié (別) appears in the title of Sùwèn 11, where it refers to discriminating the wǔzāng (五), and this character is used elsewhere in Língshū to identify locations where a channel or vessel separates from its primary trajectory (see, for instance, Língshū 10); in Língshū 52.2, those locations of separation, and their key function, are identified more specifically with lí (離), which means “to leave, part from, separate, or go against.”
