sānjiāo (三焦)

literally means “three burnt [spaces];” within Chinese medicine theory, sānjiāo (三焦) refers to the three ‘levels’ (lower, middle, and upper) in the expression of jīng (精) into qì (氣), especially through the medium of fluids; relative to the five zàng (臧), the sānjiāo (三焦) regulates the coordinated expression of kidneys, spleen, and lungs; in some contexts, sānjiāo (三焦) is responsible for regulating the dissemination of jīng (精) into yuánqì (原).
