tiāndì (天地)

literally means “heaven & earth;” this couplet is a somewhat modified yáng-yīn (陽) couplet, where heaven — tiān (天) provides the creative impulse that animates and controls the physicality of earth — dì (地); whereas yáng-yīn (陽) is symmetric pair of images, tiāndì (天地) — heaven & earth is a symbolic pair of images that is not symmetric.
